Cricket continues to grow rapidly with the rise of T20 leagues, and two competitions dominate the conversation: the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

Launched in 2008, the IPL has become the richest and most-watched T20 league globally, while the PSL, introduced in 2016, has built a strong following through competitive cricket and talent development.

As both leagues head into the 2026 season, interest has increased with the PSL shifting to an auction model and raising its salary cap, prompting fans to compare IPL and PSL across financial power, player salaries, reach, and overall quality.

IPL vs PSL Full Comparison

Here’s a complete comparison of the IPL and PSL, covering key factors like top batters and bowlers, most successful teams, past winners, and more.

1. Foundation Year

Discussions about the IPL began in late 2006, and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officially launched the tournament in 2007. However, the first season was held in 2008. This 2025 season of IPL marks its 18th edition.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) founded the PSL in 2015, with the league’s inaugural season taking place during the 2015-16 period.

2. Number Of Seasons

A total of 17 IPL seasons have been played so far. The 18th season is set to begin on March 21, 2025, and will run until May 25, 2025.

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) has completed nine seasons so far. The 10th season in 2025 is expected to coincide with the IPL, as Pakistan is scheduled to host the ICC Champions Trophy from February 19 to March 9, 2025.

3. Number Of Teams

Until 2021, the IPL featured eight teams, but in 2022, two new teams were added, bringing the total to ten. The current IPL teams are:

  • Royal Challengers Bangalore
  • Mumbai Indians
  • Chennai Super Kings
  • Rajasthan Royals
  • Gujarat Titans
  • Kolkata Knight Riders
  • Delhi Capitals
  • Punjab Kings
  • Sunrisers Hyderabad
  • Lucknow Super Giant

In contrast, the PSL has six teams:

  • Islamabad United
  • Multan Sultans
  • Quetta Gladiators
  • Peshawar Zalmi
  • Karachi Kings
  • Lahore Qalandars

4. Most Successful Batter And Bowler

Virat Kohli is the highest run-scorer in IPL history, amassing 8,004 runs. The leading wicket-taker is Yuzvendra Chahal, who has claimed 205 wickets so far in his IPL career.

In PSL, Babar Azam holds the record for most runs in PSL, with a total of 3,504 runs. The highest wicket-taker is Wahab Riaz, who has taken 113 wickets in the tournament. Riaz, now retired from international cricket, remains the most successful bowler in PSL history.

5. First Champions & Latest Champions

Rajasthan Royals became the inaugural champions of the league, defeating Chennai Super Kings in the 2008 final. Led by the late Shane Warne, this remains their only IPL title.

The current champions are Kolkata Knight Riders, who secured their victory against Sunrisers Hyderabad under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer.

Islamabad United won the first-ever PSL title under the leadership of former Pakistan captain Misbah-Ul-Haq. Last year, they claimed their third championship, making them the most successful team in PSL history.

6. Most Successful Teams

The two most successful teams in IPL history are Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK), each winning five titles. Mumbai Indians clinched their first title in 2013 under Rohit Sharma’s leadership and went on to win four more in 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020.

Chennai Super Kings secured their first IPL trophy in 2010 and followed it up with wins in 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023, all under MS Dhoni’s captaincy. MI and CSK are the only teams to have successfully defended their titles.

The most successful team in PSL history is Islamabad United, with three titles

They won their first PSL championship under Misbah-ul-Haq’s captaincy. Later, JP Duminy led the team to another title. In 2023, Shadab Khan guided Islamabad United to their third PSL title, defeating Multan Sultans in the final.

7. Prize Distribution In IPL And PSL

IPL: In IPL 2024, the prize money distribution was as follows:

  • Winners: ₹20 crore (≈ $2.42 million)
  • Runners-up: ₹12.5 crore (≈ $1.43 million)
  • Third place: ₹7 crore (≈ $846,000)
  • Fourth place: ₹6.5 crore (≈ $785,000)

This makes the IPL the most lucrative franchise cricket league globally.

For context, the 2024 T20 World Cup winners received approximately $1.52 million, only slightly higher than the IPL champion’s prize, while the runners-up received $1.22 million, significantly lower than the IPL’s second-place prize.

PSL: In the 2024 PSL, the prize money distribution was:

  • Winners: ₹ 4.13 crore
  • Runners-up:  ₹ 1.65 crore

8. Most Expensive Player

In the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction, Rishabh Pant created history after being signed by Lucknow Super Giants for ₹27 crore, making him the most expensive player in IPL.

Until recently, the Pakistan Super League (PSL) followed a draft-based system, where players were picked across fixed categories. The highest-paying Platinum category had a salary cap of USD 300,000 per player in the 2025 season.

However, starting from the 2026 season, the PSL has shifted to an auction model for the first time, along with an increased team salary cap of USD 1.6 million. Despite this structural change, the gap remains significant, as the price of a single top IPL player like Pant still exceeds what an entire PSL franchise can spend on its full squad.

9. Viewership And Media Rights

When it comes to viewership, the IPL is far ahead of the PSL, breaking multiple records during its latest season.

In 2024, the IPL attracted 620 million viewers on JioCinema (Viacom18), marking a 38% increase from the previous year. Additionally, Star Sports, which holds the TV rights, recorded 510 million viewers for the first 51 matches.

In 2023, the IPL sold its media rights for four seasons to Viacom18 and Star Sports for $6.4 billion, valuing each match at $13.4 million.

In contrast, the 2024 PSL had approximately 150 million digital views, as stated by former PCB chief Najam Sethi—just one-fourth of JioCinema’s IPL viewership. The PSL’s media rights were acquired by A Sports and Walee Technologies for $24 million for the upcoming seasons.

Conclusion: IPL Is a Bigger League Than PSL

As both leagues approach the 2026 season, the gap between IPL and PSL remains clear. The IPL’s early start in 2008, combined with global superstars like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni, and Hardik Pandya, helped it establish unmatched commercial strength and worldwide appeal.

The PSL, despite launching eight years later, has made notable progress. The introduction of an auction system and a higher team salary cap signals ambition and long-term planning. The league continues to play a vital role in developing Pakistan’s talent and delivering high-intensity cricket.

However, even with these reforms, the IPL still leads comfortably in revenue, player earnings, media rights, and global reach. While the PSL is evolving and strengthening its identity, the IPL remains the bigger and more powerful league overall. That said, both competitions contribute uniquely to world cricket, and fans ultimately benefit from the growth of each.
