On Friday, September 12, England became only the third team to breach the 300-run mark in T20Is. England faced South Africa in the second T20I of the three-match series and was asked to bat by the Proteas. Jos Buttler opened the innings with Phil Salt for the English side.

Buttler, who has been batting in the middle order since the completion of the T20 World Cup 2024, has been asked to open the innings once again in the series. The duo added 100 runs in the Powerplay, and it is only the fourth instance of a Full Member team scoring 100 runs in the Powerplay. Salt and Buttler added 126 runs for the first wicket, the fourth-highest opening partnership for England.

It looked like the English batters were out there just to rewrite the record book. By the end of the 10th over, England had 166 runs on the board, which is the highest score in a T20I at the end of the 10th over. They took 12.1 overs to go past the 200-run mark, which is again the fastest a team has made 200 runs in T20Is.

A Historical Outing for Phil Salt

On the third delivery of the 13th over, Salt recorded the fastest century by an English batter in T20Is. He took 39 deliveries to reach the three-figure mark. It was Salt’s fourth century in T20Is, and he has taken 42 innings to reach the mark. He is the fastest to score four centuries in T20Is.

England lost the wicket of Jacob Bethell in the 15th over, and Harry Brook came in to bat. Brook was equally destructive and played a knock of 41 runs off 21 deliveries, hitting five fours and one six.

Salt remained unbeaten on 141 runs off 60 deliveries and made the highest score by an English batter in T20Is. He hit 15 fours and eight sixes in his innings. No English batter has hit more boundaries than Salt in an innings in T20Is.

The Proteas were bundled out for 158 runs in 16.1 overs and lost the match by 146 runs. It is the biggest win for England by runs margin in T20Is. Jofra Archer was the pick of the bowlers and took three wickets for 25 runs in three overs. Sam Curran, Liam Dawson, and Will Jacks took two wickets each, while Adil Rashid took one wicket.
