Indian spinner Varun Chakaravarthy became the new number 1 bowler in the ICC rankings in the latest ICC rankings. He was earlier in number four place and has reached the top of the list for the first time in his career.

He is the only Indian among the top five bowlers in the rankings currently. Ravi Bishnoi, who was in sixth place earlier, has slipped to eighth place. Nuwan Thushara of Sri Lanka has made a jump of six places and is currently in sixth position.
Jacob Duffy was earlier in number one place but has now slipped to second position. Adam Zampa has moved to fourth position from fifth, while Adil Rashid has slipped to fifth place from second.
Varun is only the third Indian bowler, after Jasprit Bumrah and Bishnoi, to reach the top of the ICC rankings. Bumrah was the first Indian bowler to reach the number one position, and he did it in 2016. Bishnoi became the number one bowler in the rankings in 2023.
Varun Chakaravarthy Had A Dream Comeback To The Indian Side
Varun made his T20I debut in 2021 and picked just two wickets in six matches. He was dropped from the side and had to wait for three years to become a part of the playing 11. In 2024, he took 17 wickets in just seven games at an average of 12.41, including one five-wicket haul.

This year, he has already taken 16 wickets in seven games at an average of 10.37. Only Arshdeep Singh has taken more wickets than Varun in T20Is since 2024. The record for taking the most wickets in a year is with Bhuvneshwar Kumar. He took 37 wickets in 32 matches in 2022 at an average of 19.56. Varun might be eyeing that record, considering India is scheduled to play at least 14 T20Is before this year ends.
