The first Test between India and South Africa started on Friday, November 14, at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. It is the first Test match at this venue since 2019. Also, South Africa is playing their fourth Test at the Eden Gardens. India has won the last two matches against South Africa here. South Africa’s only win in Kolkata came in 1996.

South Africa won the toss and elected to bat here. Dewald Brevis, Kagiso Rabada, Senuran Muthusamy, and Zubayr Hamza are not a part of South Africa’s playing 11 here. Rabada has missed this Test match due to a rib injury. Muthusamy was the second-highest wicket-taker for the Proteas in the two-match Test series against Pakistan.
India also made a few changes to the playing 11 that faced the West Indies last month. Rishabh Pant has made his comeback and is playing a Test match for the first time since the England series. Dhruv Jurel has retained his place courtesy of his recent performances. He made a century in both innings against South Africa A recently. Sai Sudarshan has been dropped from the playing 11 and Washington Sundar might bat in number three place for India here. India has walked in with four spin bowling options here. Apart from Sundar, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, and Axar Patel are a part of the playing 11.
