The Vijay Merchant Trophy 2025–26 is India’s main under-16 multi-day cricket event run by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). It features domestic teams competing in a league and a knockout format to identify young, skilled players.
Teams are placed in Elite groups (five groups with six teams each) and one Plate group (six teams).

Format of Vijay Merchant Trophy 2025-26
The tournament is split into two categories: the Elite category and the Plate category. In the elite category, during the league stage, every team faces all the other teams in its group, following a round-robin schedule. Because of this format, each side gets an equal number of matches and opportunities to earn points. In the plate category, every team will face the other five teams once.
Once all group matches are complete, the teams are ranked by points in the elite category, and the top performers advance to the knockout stage.
- The top two teams from each of the five Elite Groups will enter the knockout stage.
- All group toppers (1st-place teams from each group) qualify directly for the Quarterfinals and are ranked from 1 to 5 based on their performance.
- The second-placed teams from the five groups are ranked from 6 to 10.
- The team ranked 6th also moves directly into the Quarterfinals, joining the five group toppers.
- Teams ranked 7 to 10 must compete in the Pre-Quarterfinals (PQFs) to earn a spot in the Quarterfinals.
- There will be 2 PQFs, 4 QFs, 2 SFs, and 1 Final in the Elite group.
- The top two teams in the plate category will qualify for the final.
The competition reaches its peak with the final, where the two semifinal winners play against each other. The winner of this last match is crowned the champion of the Vijay Merchant Trophy.
