Devajit Saikia, BCCI secretary, Ajit Agarkar, the chief selector of the Indian men’s cricket team, along with Suryakumar Yadav, the captain of the Indian T20I side, announced the squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026. Suryakumar Yadav will continue to lead the side, and the same team will face New Zealand in the five-match T20I series in the months of January and February.
The T20 World Cup 2026 is scheduled to start on February 7, and India will face the USA in their first game. The next match for the Men in Blue will be against Namibia on February 12. On February 15, India will face Pakistan in the tournament, while India’s last group-stage game will be against the Netherlands on February 18.
The Indian team has a chance to create history at the mega event. No team has ever won the T20 World Cup at home, and India can become the first team to do so. Also, India can become the first team to defend the title, a feat no other team has achieved. India is co-hosting this World Cup, along with Sri Lanka.

The big news is that Shubman Gill has been dropped from the squad, and Axar Patel has been named the vice-captain of the side. Rinku Singh has been recalled to the side. Another big inclusion is that of Ishan Kishan, who last played a T20I game for India in November 2023. Ishan led Jharkhand to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title this week and finished as the leading run-scorer in the tournament with 517 runs to his name in 10 matches. He hit two centuries in the tournament.
India won the five-match T20I series against New Zealand by 3-1. India won the last match of the series in Ahmedabad by 30 runs after posting a total of 231 runs for the loss of five wickets. Hardik Pandya made the second-fastest half-century for India and won the Player of the Match award. Varun Chakaravarthy won the Player of the Series award for his bowling performance.
