Quick Read Summary
- Abhishek Sharma was hospitalized before the T20 World Cup match against Namibia, according to a report
- The star India batter was reportedly suffering from a stomach infection during the game against USA
- He missed the team practice at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Tuesday
Indian cricket team star opener Abhishek Sharma has been admitted to a hospital due to a stomach infection. This development puts his participation in the T20 World Cup match against Namibia in doubt, according to Dainik Jagran. The group stage match against Namibia is scheduled for Thursday at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. Reports suggest that the 25-year-old was feeling unwell even before India’s opening game against the USA. His health got worse after he played that match despite not being fully fit.

The left-handed batter was reportedly running a high temperature. He received IV drips to get some quick relief. Sharma did not show up at the team’s practice session at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Tuesday.
“Abhi (Abhishek) still has a few issues with his tummy. We are hopeful that he’ll be available for the game in two days’ time,” assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate told the media on Tuesday.
In the match against the USA, Abhishek got out for a golden duck. He did not come out to field during India’s bowling innings. Sanju Samson took his place and fielded for the entire second innings. The young opener also skipped the post-match handshakes after India’s victory.
Maybe Doubtful For The Rest Of The Tournament
“Abhishek has been admitted to a private hospital in Delhi due to stomach infection. Some tests are being done to ascertain the problem. It is still not clear whether he will be discharged today. But match against Namibia looks doubtful as of now,” a BCCI source told PTI.
The opening batter has been in hospital for the past two days. He attended a team dinner at head coach Gautam Gambhir’s home on Sunday but left much earlier than his teammates. His condition worsened after that dinner, and he was admitted to the hospital on Monday.
If Abhishek fails to recover in time, Sanju Samson could partner with in-form Ishan Kishan at the top of the batting order. During Tuesday’s practice session, Samson spent a lot of time batting alongside Kishan in the nets.
Ryan ten Doeschate also confirmed that Washington Sundar has joined the Indian squad ahead of their second group-stage fixture against Namibia on February 12.
The assistant coach provided updates on key players during a pre-match press conference in Delhi on Tuesday. This included news about Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness status.
“Sundar joined the team yesterday, and he will train with the squad today,” Doeschate revealed.
He added, “Bumrah has been bowling after a 10-day break, and he’s feeling a lot better. He’s moving well and will bowl again today.”
When asked about India’s recent win over the USA, Doeschate praised Suryakumar Yadav for his match-winning effort. The captain scored an unbeaten 84 off 49 balls to rescue India from a difficult position of 77 for 6.
“Thankfully, our captain came good. He’s had an indifferent time over the past year, but that’s why he’s surrounded by good people. His leadership and consistency are evident in the way he played and rescued the team last week,” said India’s assistant coach.
India will face Pakistan in Colombo on February 15. The team management hopes to have Abhishek fit and ready for that highly anticipated clash. After the Pakistan game, India will travel to Ahmedabad to play the Netherlands on February 18 in their final group-stage match.
