On the second day of the third Test between England and India, Joe Root scored a century on the first ball of the day by scoring a four. It was Root’s 37th century in Test cricket. Root had already made a few records on the first day of the match. He became only the third English batter to score more than 3000 runs against a single opponent. He also became the first batter to score 7000 Test runs in England.
India has been one of the favorite opponents for Root thus far in his Test career. It was his 11th century against the Indian team. Since his debut in 2012, no batter has scored more runs than Root. It was Root’s first century in Test cricket this year.
England finished with 251 runs for the loss of four wickets on the first day
England won the toss in the third Test and elected to bat. They picked Jofra Archer in the playing 11, who replaced Josh Tongue. Archer is playing a Test match for the first time in more than four years. India also made one change to their playing 11. Jasprit Bumrah was brought back in the side in place of Prasidh Krishna. Bumrah was not a part of the team in the last game.
Nitish Kumar Reddy, who didn’t have a decent outing in the second Test, retained his place in the side. He scored two runs and bowled just six overs in the second Test. In his very first over in the third Test, Reddy picked the wickets of Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett.
Ollie Pope and Joe Root 109 runs for the third wicket before Pope was dismissed for 44 runs off Ravindra Jadeja. Bumrah took his first wicket of the match in the 55th over as he dismissed Harry Brook.
Rishabh Pant sustained an injury on his finger on first day and was replaced by Dhurv Jurel in the field. At the end of the day, Root was unbeaten on 99 runs, while Ben Stokes made 39 runs.
