England finished the first day of the third Test with 251 runs for the loss of four wickets. Joe Root and Ben Stokes remained not out at the end of the day. Root scored 99 runs off 191 deliveries, while Stokes made 39 runs off 102 deliveries.

For India, Nitish Kumar Reddy was the pick of the bowlers and took two wickets for 46 runs in 14 overs. Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah took one wicket each.
Toss and Playing 11 Update
England had already named the playing 11 for this match and named Jofra Archer in the team. Stokes won the toss and elected to bat. At the time of toss, Gill mentioned that he would have preferred to bowl if he had won the toss.
India made one change in the playing 11. Jasprit Bumrah, who missed the first match, was named in the playing 11. He replaced Prasidh Krishna.
India vs England, 3rd Test, Day 1 – As It Happened
Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett opened the innings for England and played cautiously. By the end of the 10th over, the batters had piled up 35 runs on the board. The first breakthrough for India came in the 14th over, bowled by Nitish Kumar Reddy.

On the third delivery of the 14th over, Nitish bowled a short ball down the leg side. Rishabh Pant caught the ball in the back, and Duckett was dismissed for 23 runs off 40 deliveries. On the last delivery of the innings, Nitish took the wicket of Zak Crawley as well. Both the openers were back in the pavilion within a space of just four deliveries.
Pope and Root were fresh in the middle post the 14th over. At the end of the first session, England had scored 83 runs for the loss of two wickets. Pant got struck on his finger in the 34th over and was replaced by Dhurv Jurel.
Both Pope and Root remained in the middle till the end of the second session as well. The team scored 153 runs for the loss of two wickets. Jadeja came out to bowl the first over of the third session and dismissed Pope on the very first delivery. Pope scored 44 runs off 104 deliveries before getting dismissed.

In the 55th over, Bumrah bowled Harry Brook, and suddenly England was on the backfoot once again. England suffered no casualties after this and finished the day with 251 runs for the loss of four wickets. On the second day of the match, Root will be looking to score his 37th century.
