Pant attempted to hit a reverse sweep, and it hit his right foot before taking an under-edge of his bat. England straightaway went for a review, but the under-edge saved Pant. However, he couldn’t continue and had to be taken away in a little ambulance.

At the end of the day, the BCCI gave an update about Pant’s injury. From the official X handle, BCCI said, “Rishabh Pant was hit on his right foot while batting on Day 1 of the Manchester Test. He was taken for scans from the stadium. The BCCI Medical Team is monitoring his progress.”

Will Rishabh Pant Bat on the Second Day?

The BCCI has not provided any further updates regarding Pant’s injury. But the visuals during the match made it clear that it will be really difficult for Pant to feature in the game. Pant sustained a finger injury in the first innings of the previous Test and couldn’t keep wickets through the entirety of the game.

In case Pant doesn’t feature in this game, Jurel will have to keep the wickets for the team as he did in the previous Test. However, Jurel won’t be allowed to bat. As per ICC’s rule, a non-concussed injured player can only be replaced by a substitute fielder. A like-for-like substitution is only in the case of concussions.

Earlier, England’s captain Ben Stokes won the toss for the fourth time in the series and elected to bowl. England brought in Liam Dawson in place of Shoaib Bashir, while India made three changes to the playing 11. Sai Sudharsan replaced Karun Nair. Shardul Thakur and Anshul Kamboj came in for Nitish Kumar Reddy and Akash Deep, respectively.

KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal provided a solid start to the Indian team and added 94 runs for the first wicket. Rahul was dismissed for 46 runs, and Jaiswal went on to score a half-century. Sudharsan, who made his Test debut in the first game of the series, scored his maiden half-century. India finished the day with 264 runs for the loss of four wickets. Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul were there in the middle at the end of the day and had scored 19 runs each. Stokes took two wickets, while Dawson and Chris Woakes picked one wicket each.
