New South Wales is the most successful team of the Sheffield Shield, winning the title 47 times. Victoria was the inaugural champion of this Australia’s domestic tournament at 1892-93.

Over the years, new teams joined this prestigious tournament, but New South Wales and Victoria never lost their dominance. 1. New South Wales (NSW): 47 Titles 

New South Wales is the most successful team in the Sheffield Shield’s history with 47 titles. Their dominance especially stands out after 1950, when they won 9 consecutive seasons from 1953-54 to 1961-62, a record that remains unsurpassed.

NSW players have historically dominated Australian cricket, with many international stars emerging from this state team. NSW continued to perform well into the 21st century, maintaining their status as perennial contenders and champions, with the latest title coming in the 2019-20 season.

2. Victoria: 32 Titles 

The Sheffield Shield competition began in the 1892-93 season after Lord Sheffield donated the Shield as a trophy to promote intercolonial cricket in Australia.

Victoria was the first team to win this inaugural title, marking the beginning of a historic domestic rivalry. After that, they became one of the dominating teams and won the title 32 times. Victoria’s dream run was from 2014/15 to 2016/17, as they won 3 consecutive titles. They most recently finished as runners-up in the 2025-26 season after losing the final to South Australia.

3. Western Australia: 18 Titles 

Western Australia joined the Sheffield Shield in the 1947-48 season and quickly became competitive by becoming the champion in its joining year.

They won their 2nd title in 1967-68 after 20 years and have claimed 18 titles so far. From 1986/87 to 1988/89 and 2021/22 to 2023/24, they won the title 3 times in a row. 

4. South Australia: 15 Titles 

South Australia was the winner of the Sheffield Shield in the 1893-94 season and became the 2nd champion of the tournament. They were one of the founding teams alongside New South Wales and Victoria. They became a team to defeat after the 1900s, when they started winning the title consistently.

Historically, they have fewer titles compared to NSW and Victoria, with 15 Shield wins overall. After a long wait of 29 years, South Australia won again in the 2024-25 season, breaking a nearly three-decade drought since their last triumph in 1995-96. They followed this up by successfully defending their title in the 2025-26 season, marking their first-ever back-to-back championship win.

5. Queensland: 9 Titles 

Queensland joined the Sheffield Shield in 1926-27 and took 68 years to establish themselves as a title contender.

They ended their title drought in 1994/95 after making many outings in the finals. They have won the Shield nine times. They dominated the Sheffield Shield from 1999/00 to 2001/02, winning the trophy 3 times in a row.

6. Tasmania: 3 Titles 

Tasmania is the newest team, joining the Sheffield Shield in the 1977-78 season.

Initially, they were considered underdogs, as they captured their first-ever Sheffield Shield title in the 2006-07 season. Since then, Tasmania has added two more titles in 2010/11 and 2012/13.

Conclusion: South Australia Makes History In 2025/26 With 15th Title

The Sheffield Shield has been dominated by New South Wales with 47 titles, followed by Victoria with 32. Western Australia, South Australia, Queensland, and Tasmania have also had their share of success across different years. 

South Australia successfully defended their title in 2025/26 by defeating Victoria in the final. This historic win secured their 15th title and their first back-to-back triumph in the competition’s history.
