NSW players have historically dominated Australian cricket, with many international stars emerging from this state team. NSW continued to perform well into the 21st century, maintaining their status as perennial contenders and champions, with the latest title coming in the 2019-20 season.
2. Victoria: 32 Titles
The Sheffield Shield competition began in the 1892-93 season after Lord Sheffield donated the Shield as a trophy to promote intercolonial cricket in Australia.

Victoria was the first team to win this inaugural title, marking the beginning of a historic domestic rivalry. After that, they became one of the dominating teams and won the title 32 times. Victoria’s dream run was from 2014/15 to 2016/17, as they won 3 consecutive titles. They most recently finished as runners-up in the 2025-26 season after losing the final to South Australia.
3. Western Australia: 18 Titles
Western Australia joined the Sheffield Shield in the 1947-48 season and quickly became competitive by becoming the champion in its joining year.

4. South Australia: 15 Titles
South Australia was the winner of the Sheffield Shield in the 1893-94 season and became the 2nd champion of the tournament. They were one of the founding teams alongside New South Wales and Victoria. They became a team to defeat after the 1900s, when they started winning the title consistently.

Historically, they have fewer titles compared to NSW and Victoria, with 15 Shield wins overall. After a long wait of 29 years, South Australia won again in the 2024-25 season, breaking a nearly three-decade drought since their last triumph in 1995-96. They followed this up by successfully defending their title in the 2025-26 season, marking their first-ever back-to-back championship win.
