The Sheffield Shield 2025-26 is Australia’s premier domestic first-class cricket tournament, marking its 124th season. The season started on October 4, 2025, with a full home-and-away schedule where each team plays the others twice in four-day matches. 

 It features six state teams:

  • New South Wales
  • Victoria
  • Queensland
  • South Australia
  • Western Australia
  • Tasmania

The top two teams at the end of the regular season will compete in a five-day final from March 26 to 30, 2026. South Australia enters the season as the defending champions after ending a 29-year title drought in the previous season.

Sheffield Shield 2025-26 Points Distribution

In the Sheffield Shield 2025-26, teams will earn points based on match results and bonus points from the first innings of each match.

  • The winning team will receive 6 points, and the losing team will not receive any points.
  • If a match produces no result or ends in a draw, both participating teams will receive 1 point. 
  • Each team will get 0.01 bonus points for every run scored above 200 in the 1st 100 overs of the 1st inning. 
  • On the other hand, the bowling team will also receive 0.1 bonus points for every wicket taken in the 1st 100 overs of the opponent’s 1st inning. 
  • If teams are level on total points and have an equal NRR at the end of the group stage, the quotient (the team’s batting average divided by its bowling average) is used to determine the team’s position. The team with the higher quotient will qualify for the playoffs. 

Sheffield Shield 2025-26 Format 

In the Sheffield Shield 2025-26, each team will follow a round-robin format, where they will play each other twice, once away and once at home. A total of 31 games will be played, including the final. The top 2 teams from the group stage will qualify for the final.
