The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2026 was disrupted on Thursday, January 15, as players boycotted scheduled games in protest against controversial remarks by a senior Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) official.
The walkout forced the postponement of two BPL matches and sparked a major crisis within the Bangladesh cricket administration.
Players Refuse to Take the Field
On Thursday, the Chattogram Royals, Noakhali Express, Rajshahi Warriors, and Sylhet Titans did not appear for their scheduled matches at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka. The boycott effectively suspended league action for the day, leaving fans disappointed and organizers under intense pressure.

The protest was led by the Cricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB), with support from senior stars like Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mehidy Hasan Miraz. Players demanded the immediate removal of BCB director M. Najmul Islam, whose recent public comments were condemned as demeaning and unprofessional.
What Triggered the Boycott
The controversy peaked after Islam publicly labeled former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal an “Indian agent” on social media. This was a response to Tamim urging for a peaceful dialogue regarding the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup standoff.

Further fueling the anger, Islam suggested that players should return “crores of taka” to the board because they had not won a major global title, and stated they would not be compensated if Bangladesh withdrew from the upcoming World Cup in India. These remarks drew a fierce backlash from the entire cricketing fraternity, leading to the standoff.
BCB Responds with Administrative Changes
In response to the boycott, the BCB held an emergency meeting on Thursday afternoon. The board announced that Najmul Islam had been relieved of his responsibilities as Chairman of the Finance Committee with immediate effect. BCB President Aminul Islam Bulbul has taken over as the acting chairman.

While Islam was stripped of his committee leadership, he remains on the board in a Director capacity for now. The BCB has issued him a formal 48-hour show-cause notice to explain his remarks, signaling that further disciplinary action is pending.
BPL to Resume After Resolution
Following late-night discussions between CWAB representatives and BCB officials, the players agreed to call off the boycott “in the greater interest of the game.”
The BPL officially resumed on Friday, January 16, 2026, with a revised match schedule. The matches lost on Thursday are being played today, and the playoff dates (Eliminator and Qualifier 1) have been pushed to January 20 to ensure the tournament’s completion.
What This Means for Bangladesh Cricket
This incident marks a significant moment in Bangladesh cricket, demonstrating unprecedented player unity. While the league continues, the controversy has underscored deep tensions between the administration and athletes.
It also highlights the ongoing uncertainty regarding Bangladesh’s participation in international events and the need for respectful governance.
