On day four, Rahul added just one run to his score before he was dismissed. Rishabh Pant joined Kuldeep in the middle and struck his first three scoring shots for 4, 4 and 6. However, he was hit three times by short-deliveries from fast bowler Tshepo Moreki.

He was first hit on the helmet, then on the right elbow, and finally on the abdomen. It prompted the physio and coach to remove him from the field as a precaution. Pant was forced to retire hurt during the third day’s first session.

Pant had earlier demonstrated form with a 24 runs in the first innings, but with this body-blow scare ahead of the Test series opener versus South Africa, his fitness will now be under scrutiny.
