Mitchell Marsh, the Australia captain, will miss the team’s opening match of the ICC T20 World Cup after he took a direct hit to the groin during a training session earlier this week. Cricket Australia confirmed this news in an official statement on Thursday, just hours before their scheduled game against Ireland.

“Marsh is experiencing ongoing pain and discomfort which is restricting his movement. Scans have confirmed internal testicular bleeding, and he will require a period of rest and rehabilitation. His return to play will be guided by symptom resolution and medical advice,” the statement read.

Cricket Australia has not provided any specific timeframe for when Marsh might return to action.

The selectors have now asked Steve Smith, who was part of the standby list, to fly to Sri Lanka. He will prepare and adjust to the conditions in case the team needs him during the tournament.
