The league started in 2023 and is run through a joint venture where CSA owns 50%, SuperSport owns 30%, and Sundar Raman owns 20%. The format is similar to the IPL, making it easy for fans to follow.

The tournament has six city-based teams, all owned by IPL franchises. In the SA20 2025–26 season, these six teams will once again compete for the prestigious SA20 title:

  • MI Cape Town
  • Pretoria Capitals
  • Joburg Super Kings
  • Sunrisers Eastern Cape
  • Durban’s Super Giants
  • Paarl Royals
