In the Vijay Hazare Trophy, teams are divided into Elite and Plate groups. Elite Groups consist of the stronger, established teams. They play competitive matches among themselves, and the top teams move to the knockouts.

Plate Group is made up of newer or developing teams. It gives them a chance to gain experience, and the best performers can advance to face Elite teams in the later stages. This system keeps the tournament balanced and gives every team a fair chance to compete.

Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26 Schedule

In the Vijay Hazare Trophy, teams play round-robin matches within their groups. In the Elite Groups (A‑D)  top one or two teams from each Elite Group advance directly to the knockouts. In the Plate Group, only the top team qualifies for the knockouts and may earn promotion to the Elite groups for the next season.

Group Stage

  • Teams are divided into Elite Groups (A, B, C, D) and the Plate Group.
  • Each team plays round-robin matches within its group.
  • Points are awarded as follows:

Elite Group

  • The top teams from each Elite Group qualify for the knockout stage.
  • Depending on the format, sometimes second-placed teams also qualify as pre-quarterfinalists.

Plate Group

  • Teams in the Plate Group play against each other.
  • The top team(s) from the Plate Group can qualify for pre-quarterfinals or quarterfinals.
  • The Plate Group winner often earns promotion to the Elite Group for the next season.

Knockout Stage

  • Includes pre-quarterfinals, quarterfinals, semifinals, and final.
  • Teams that progress from the group stages compete in single-elimination matches until the champion is decided.
