After announcing his retirement from the Indian Premier League, Ravichandran Ashwin could be all set to make an appearance in the upcoming edition of the Big Bash League in Australia. According to a report in Cricbuzz, Cricket Australia’s (CA) CEO, Todd Greenberg, has had a discussion with Aswhin after he announced his retirement from IPL.

In his retirement post on X, Ashwin had mentioned becoming an “explorer of the game around various leagues.” Hence, the BBL could become the first tournament that Ashwin might feature in. The next edition of the league is scheduled to start on December 14 and will run till January 25.
The overseas player draft for the upcoming season of the BBL was already completed in June. Hence, CA will have to plan out how Ashwin can become a part of the league if he agrees to play. Also, the report in Cricbuzz has suggested that if everything goes as per the plan, Ashwin might end up playing either for Melbourne Stars or Melbourne Renegades in the BBL this year.
“Ashwin is a champion cricketer who will bring a lot to the Big Bash” – Todd Greenberg, Cricket Australia’s CEO
Greenberg has confirmed having a conversation with Ashwin regarding his playing in the league. “To get someone with Ashwin’s credentials to come over here for the BBL will be great at so many levels. He’s a champion cricketer who will bring a lot to the Big Bash and to our cricket summer,” Greenberg said as quoted by Cricuzz.

All eight teams already spent the majority of their salary purse during the draft. Hence, CA will have to come up with something extraordinary to get Ashwin onboarded. The board is highly interested in looking at all sorts of deals to sign Ashwin. There have been times when a couple of star Australian players were paid by the match in the past. David Warner reportedly received 80,000 AUD for each game that he played in the BBL two seasons back. CA might give this kind of deal to Ashwin, and a few brand or endorsement deals can also be clubbed with these fees.
