The Buchi Babu Trophy, named after M. V. Mahipathi Naidu, the Father of Madras Cricket, continues to be a prestigious stage for India’s domestic talent.

The 2025 edition featured 16 teams in Chennai, producing everything from close finishes to dominant wins. After weeks of action, Hyderabad and TNCA President’s XI reached the final at the CSK High Performance Centre on September 6. Hyderabad emerged as the winner, taking a first innings lead and holding firm on the last day to retain the Buchi Babu Trophy, their sixth overall title.

Buchi Babu Trophy 2025 Final: Hyderabad vs TNCA President’s XI

  • Sep 6 (Day 1): Hyderabad ended the opening day strongly at 296/5. Aman Rao (85) set the tone with attacking shots, while Kodimela Himateja (97) fell just short of a century. Varun Goud added 67. TNCA pacer B. Trilok Nag (3/59) was the standout bowler.
  • Sep 7 (Day 2): Hyderabad were bowled out for 376, with TNCA’s P. Vidyuth (4/104) and J. Hemchudeshan (3/120) leading the fightback. TNCA openers R. Vimal Khumar (54) and S. Radhakrishnan (73*) put on a 127-run stand. At stumps, TNCA were 142/1, trailing by 234.
  • Sep 8 (Day 3): TNCA’s Radhakrishnan fell agonizingly close to his century on 98, while Ajitesh added 57. Hyderabad fought back with Rohit Rayudu’s double strike and Varun Goud’s key LBW of Ajitesh. In the final session, Nitin Sai Yadav and Goud cleaned up the lower order, bowling TNCA out for 353, 23 runs short. Hyderabad then lost Nitish Reddy early, but Aman Rao and Ravi Teja ensured a 37-run lead at stumps.
  • Sep 9 (Day 4): TNCA bowlers struck early, removing Aman Rao (19), Himateja (11), and skipper Rahul Singh cheaply. Ravi Teja (30) resisted, but the day belonged to Varun Goud (56) and Rahul Radesh (31)**, who added an unbeaten 85 off 242 balls for the sixth wicket. Their gritty stand ensured survival as Hyderabad reached 155/5 in 70 overs, extending their overall lead to 178. Rain forced an early Tea, and play ended in a handshake. The match was drawn, but Hyderabad retained the Buchi Babu Trophy on first innings lead, sealing their sixth title overall and second in succession.

Semi-final 1: TNCA President’s XI vs Jammu & Kashmir

  • Aug 31 (Day 1): TNCA President’s XI, batting first, put up a strong total of 265/3 at stumps. Vimal Khumar was the star with a century (112), and Pradosh Paul provided excellent support with 91. The duo added a formidable 189 runs for the second wicket.
  • Sep 1 (Day 2): TNCA President’s XI continued their dominance, finishing the day at 503/7. G. Ajitesh scored a century (101), and valuable partnerships from Andre Siddarth (57) and R.S. Ambrish (62*) further strengthened their position.
  • Sep 2 (Day 3): TNCA President’s XI declared their first innings at a massive 567/9. Jammu & Kashmir, in their second innings, had a daunting task ahead and were 212/4 at stumps, with Yawar Hassan (72*) and Abdul Samad (75) providing some resistance. TNCA’s P. Vidyuth took three wickets.
  • Sep 3 (Day 4): J&K conceded the match. TNCA President’s XI advanced to the final.

Semi-final 2: Hyderabad vs Haryana

  • Aug 31 (Day 1): In a low-scoring day, Hyderabad was bowled out for 225, with Haryana finishing the day on 14/0.
  • Sep 1 (Day 2): Hyderabad’s first innings score was later corrected to 313 all out. Ayush Pandey (82) and Anuj Tiwari (93) were the main contributors. Haryana responded by being bowled out for 208, led by Himanshu Rana’s 75. Hyderabad, in their second innings, were 49/1 at stumps, with a lead of 66 runs. Rohith Rayudu of Hyderabad took five wickets.
  • Sep 2 (Day 3): Hyderabad’s second innings concluded at 254 all out, with A. Varun Goud scoring a crucial 91. Haryana was left with a target of 272 for victory but had a terrible start, ending the day at 6/2 with Hyderabad’s Sai Yadav claiming both wickets in the final over.
  • Sep 3 (Day 4): Hyderabad defeated Haryana to seal their spot in the final, completing a strong all-round performance in the semifinal.

A total of 16 teams are participating in the Buchi Babu Trophy 2025, which are divided into 4 different groups. The topper of each group will advance to the semi-final.

In the first semi-final, the table toppers of Group A and Group B will face each other. In the second semi-final, the top teams in Groups C and D will be against each other. 

Schedule Of Buchi Babu Trophy 2025

This tournament will be played in four rounds. For each round, there will be eight matches. The two semi-finals and the final will be a part of the last round. 

The league stage games will be played over three days. The first innings of each game will have 90 overs, while the second innings will see each team play a total of 45 overs. The knockout matches will be four-day games.
