SA vs BAN: 2nd TEST PREVIEW

2022 has been nothing but a fairytale for Bangladesh Cricket. Bangladesh was yet to win a game in either New Zealand or South Africa until 2021. Now, they've won a test match in New Zealand and an Odi series in South Africa. The Bangladesh Women won their first game in the Women's World Cup. After an historic odi series win, all eyes were on whether Bangladesh could create history by winning their 1st ever test on South African soil with half the squad playing t20 cricket in India's domestic league, but cricket in whites is a totally different ball game and even more in SA for a Asian side. Bangladesh lost the 1st test by 220 runs after the spin duo of Harmer and Maharaj created history by picking all the 10 wkts in the 4th innings and dismissing Bangladesh for their 2nd lowest score in test cricket.

Keshav Maharaj was the star in the 4th innings with a 7 wkt haul as he went past Paul Adams to take the most wkts by a SA spinner in tests since readmission. Simon Harmer had a brilliant domestic season where he took 44 wkts in 7 games. Harmer who was playing a test for SA for the 1st time since November 2015 ran through Bangladesh's top order in the 1st inning and took 7 wkts in the game.

Bangladesh have played 7 tests in SA so far, they have lost 5 by an innings, 1 by over 300 runs and 1 by over 200 runs. Mahmudul Hasan Joy was a lone bright spot in the batting as he racked up his maiden test 100. The test match was in the news for all the wrong reasons. 7 decisions against the visitors and they have filed a official written complaint regarding this. The hosts also complained about sledging from the SA side. Elgar has called it an overreaction "I don't think they're justified, whatsoever. We play the game hard, and if anything we were just giving back what we were getting when we were batting," Elgar said before the second Test in Gqeberha. "It is Test cricket. It's a man's environment when it comes to playing at this level, and I intend to play the game hard. By no means did we swear or use foul language towards the Bangladeshi cricketers, because we respect them. We were just giving them back what we were receiving. I think they need to harden up and play the game at a level that maybe they're not used to. We received it first, and we responded in that way" This is what the Proteas captained had to say.

Key players and Stats

South Africa

Dean Elgar: The most experienced player in the side with 75 caps, the skipper had a daunting task ahead of him with half of his key players absent from the squad in the 1st test. Elgar scored 330 runs vs Bangladesh last time in 2017 with knocks of 199 and 113 and continued his great form against them by scoring 67 & 64.

Keegan Petersen: He was man of the series against India earlier this summer who have arguably one of the best bowling attacks in the world. He missed the bus for NZ series due to Covid. He did not have a good outing in the 1st test but looked very steady at the crease in the 2nd innings during his knock of 36.

Temba Bavuma: Temba had 2 back to back good series against WI and India and top scored with 93 in the 1st innings. He averages 47.85 with 670 runs from his last 10 tests. Thats the best by a SA batter in that period.

Keshav Maharaj: He is the most experienced bowler in the side with 41 caps. He has taken 15 wkts from 6 innings vs Bangladesh and bowled out the visitors with a 7 fer in the 4th innings. He also has a 9 fer in tests and a test hattrick vs WI last year.

Bangladesh

Liton Das: Since the start of 2020, Liton Das averages 47.40 in tests with 2 100s and 7 50s from 18 innings. 95, 114, 59, 6, 45, 86, 8, 102, 41,2 are his last 11 scores in test cricket.

Ebadot Hossain: He was the highest wicket taker in NZ along with Trent Boult with 9 wkts and took 5 wkts in both innings of Durban test.

Mahmudul Hasan Joy: He became the only 3rd asian opener in tests since 2007 to score a test 100 in SA after Karunaratne and KL Rahul. He also scored 78 in NZ.

Taijul Islam: He has taken 35 wickets in his last 10 tests which include three 4 wkt hauls and one 5 wkt haul.
